Hydro Excavation Waste Recycling

The disposal of Hydro Excavation waste is unlikely at any clean fill site, and even if accepted, it would incur large disposal costs due to its solid liquid state and weight. As legislation becomes more stringent, the payload per truck will be reduced, and there is an increasing need for urban recycling solutions instead of rural dumping grounds. CDE offers onsite remediation of the sludge as a solution providing companies with a treatment method that is both responsible and sustainable.

Across the world, we are rapidly redeveloping and rebuilding urbanised areas. This rise in land development has increased the requirement for hydro excavation because of its reliability and accuracy. However the by-product of this highly reliable process is slurry. Made up of 60% water and 40% solids, hydrovac waste is difficult, not to mention expensive, for drilling operators to dispose of at landfill due it’s solid liquid state and weight. Instead hydro excavation slurry is usually treated as liquid waste and needs to be disposed of at liquid waste facilities which can be expensive.

Hydrovac trucks are having to drive miles to find legal dump sites to dispose of the waste, which is time consuming and costly to any business.

As well as this, some contractors are resorting to expensive commodities like sawdust to add to the hydrovac waste to solidify it increasing its weight for disposal which isn’t efficient or sustainable.

Solution

CDE’s dual stage wet recycling G:MAX solution allows wet slurry to be recycled onsite and 85% of both solids and water are recovered for reuse in the market. G:MAX separates the recyclable materials within the hydro excavation waste, i.e. sand, clay and bentonite, into viable sources of aggregate.

When paired with the HYDRO:TIP tipping system, hydrovac slurry can be pumped directly to the treatment system to allow a rapid tanker discharge time.

Beyond this, if heavily contaminated, hydrovac waste can be further processed by tertiary water treatment to remove heavy metals and hydrocarbons from the waste water stream. This enables a wider range of more difficult and therefore more lucrative waste streams to be processed.

  • Revenue generation- recovering clean dewatered fractions of sand, stone, and aggregates can be sold for low grade construction applications, such as backfill & pipe-bedding, creating a new source of revenue.

  • A greater control of waste- a secure method of processing hydro excavation waste as opposed to driving miles for a disposal site, or being at the mercy of other disposal facilities should they decide to close or increase their gate fee (particularly in remote areas where limited disposal sites are available).

  • Increased uptime- our systems receive hydrovac waste directly from vac trucks, eliminating the need to drive to rural dump sites to dispose of the material and allowing trucks to return to the dig site more quickly.
