Posillico Materials LLC is located on Long Island, New York. Incorporated in 1946, the family company has grown to become one of the top engineering contracting firms in New York and leader in public works projects. Over four generations, Posillico has expanded and integrated services to include civil, materials, environmental, paving, drilling, utilities, development, and consulting, enabling it to provide seamless, cost-effective construction solutions to multi-layered problems.
Long Island has been plagued by pollution from toxic dumping and industrial pollution, largely due to its proximity to New York City. Contaminated soil could potentially affect groundwater and drinking water as Long Island’s water supplies come from three major source aquifers close to the ground’s surface.
As guardians of Long Island and its community, Posillico saw the opportunity to remediate the land, removing contaminates and returning previously-polluted land back to good use to meet the growing population and increased urban living demands. There is no other facility offering this service on Long Island, the next closest provider resides in New Jersey which brings its own operating and environmental implications such as hauling costs and trucking pollution.
Together, Posillico and CDE designed and installed a highly innovative wet processing recycling solution, the first of its kind in North America, which would effectively process the incoming contaminated material to produce high-quality washed construction sand and aggregates, while simultaneously removing contaminates.
The new recycling system incorporates the R2500 primary scalping screen feed system, AggMax portable logwasher, M4500 with integrated Attrition Cells, and CFCU for density separation, EvoWash, and full closed-circuit water recycling with the inclusion of an AquaCycle thickener and a Filter Press.
Within its first few months of operation, the plant processed over 65k tons of contaminated soil from the Harbor Isle brownfield site. The site was previously used by Cibro Petroleum as a petroleum storage facility until the late 80s and lay abandoned due to the petroleum contamination to the soil and groundwater. The cleaned-up site will now be used for housing.
CDE’s wet processing system with a 300tph capacity has helped Posillico remediate 90% of the material into concrete & mason sands, and three aggregates: ¼”-5/8”, 5/8”-1 ¼” and 1 ¼”- 4”. The facility uses the latest wet processing methods to create a range of certified sand and aggregates, 85% of which are being used by Posillico Paving in asphalt production, and the rest is sold to customers.
