Soil Washing

Extract maximum value from soil and excavation waste materials with CDE's advanced wet processing solutions which ensure all valuable elements are recovered and all contaminants are removed.

What is Soil Washing?

Soil washing involves the recovery of a range of materials from soils, often extracted from excavation waste sites. This material, traditionally considered waste, contains valuable materials that can be extracted for re-use through wet processing to clean and separate. Depending on your location you may also refer to this material as muck away.

Many excavated soils will contain contaminants of various levels that need to be removed to ensure the end materials are suitable for re-use. CDE currently processes contaminated soil and various streams of C&D waste material across the world, processing over 15 million tonnes every year, and our portfolio includes the world's largest contaminated soils wash plant and the world's largest C&D waste recycling facility.

Typical Soil Contaminants

The level and type of contamination present will vary from site to site and these are reviewed on a case by case basis with the correct solution provided to meet your specific requirements.

Typical contaminants include:

  • Hydrocarbons such as diesel & petroleum range organics
  • Volatile organic compounds
  • Semi-volatile organic compounds
  • Heavy metals
  • Manmade chemicals & pesticides

Benefits of Soil Washing

Our bespoke soil washing systems provide savings on landfill charges, prevent extra investment in waste storage equipment, and produce new materials for reuse.

We can no longer ignore soil contamination; we must utilize remediation technology to help us eliminate potential risks to human health and to protect the world around us.

By introducing our advanced processing systems for soil washing you will:

  • Maximize soil and excavation waste recycling.
  • Maximize the production of high quality, high value recycled sand and aggregates which can be used as a replacement for natural materials in a range of construction applications including concrete and asphalt production.
  • Ensure the ability to meet the growing demand for sand and aggregates from a sustainable source.
  • Minimizing transport costs for sand and aggregates – recycled materials are typically produced closer to urban centers.
  • Reduce the carbon footprint of your processing operation by producing recycled sand and aggregates closer to the market.
  • Maximize the removal of the various contaminants that will otherwise restrict the final destination for your recycled sand and aggregate products.

Soil washing process

Every soil washing plant from CDE is unique as it is designed according to the specific requirements of the customer, their site, and the material that will be fed into and washed by the system, along with the desired product output from the washing process.

Our technologies utilize a suite of mechanical, chemical, and biological processes for recovering washed solids such as sand and aggregates. Contaminants are transferred into the water phase which is effectively treated to produce recycled water for reuse within the process.

Typically a number of processes phases are involved, including:

  1. Feeding & pre-screening
  2. Aggregate scrubbing
  3. Contaminant removal
  4. Metals removal
  5. Sand washing
  6. Aggregate sizing
  7. Primary stage water treatment
  8. Sludge Management
  9. Tertiary water treatment
